Rearchitecture in the Cloud - #4
With great pleasure, we would like to invite you to the #4 meetup in the series of Tech Bytes @Ocado Technology Kraków. This time we're going to talk about rearchitecting cloud applications. Check out how we did it for performance, reliability, cost-effectiveness… and sometimes mid-flight!
The event starts at 18:00 (6 pm) at our Ocado Kraków office, located in High5ive Building (Pawia 21 Street), on the 4th floor. Don't miss it: come and be inspired by lectures lasting 30-40 minutes each from our great members of the Ocado Technology Team. See ya there?
*** Agenda ***
- 18:00 - Grab a drink and take a seat
- 18:10 - Intro
- 18:20 - 18:45 Bartosz Małocha, Senior Staff Software Engineer at Ocado Technology
Topic: Designing systems architecture: How we saved $3.5 million on AWS Cloud costs
About: Let’s talk about the process for designing software architecture. How to design software architecture? I’ll illustrate the theory with a case study: redesign of the existing system architecture that resulted in massive Cloud cost savings.
- 18:50 - 19:20 Dominik Adamiak, Senior Software Engineer & Marek Soluch, Senior Staff Software Engineer at Ocado Technology
Topic: Swapping ActiveMQ for SQS can be like swapping a steam engine for an electric one
About: Imagine a journey on a train. It is a bumpy road, the speed is quite high, and suddenly engineers start swapping the engine from a steam engine to an electric one. It sounds crazy, but this is what we experienced while switching from feature-rich ActiveMQ to a more simplistic SQS broker. Doing it in a 24/7 available, critical system is like doing the swap on a running train. Not losing any message on transition is like not losing any passengers on the way.
If you would like to know how we did all of that, and introduced “transactionality” to SQS, filled in the gaps between SQS & JMS API, accidentally made things run 4x faster --> come to our talk.
Of course, both talks are worth coming to our next meet-up :D
Hope to see you there!
