Hello everyone!

Is there a better way to celebrate Valantine's Day other than showing your true love for Scala by attending ScalaWAW meetup? Of course not!

Abstracts & bios:

  • "From millions to billions of documents - story of scaling ElasticSearch 500x", Michał Matusiak, Aleksander Kramarz

Story of scaling one of the most popular NoSQL databases. Two Sumos Michał Matusiak (Engineering Manager) and Aleksander Kramarz (Senior Software Engineer) will present the challenges and architecture designs that helped to scale the system from an internal dogfooding tool to an enterprise product.

  • "Izumi Framework: reinvent your productivity with modern pure functional Scala", Kai, Pavel

There is never enough time, and the complexity always grows. Many projects suffer from implicit “shift right” practices and many teams spend up to 80% of time on problems which should not exist at all.

In this talk, we’ll show how we helped our client to save at least a half of the development costs by using modern pure functional Scala and adopting a set of unconventional approaches supported by our tools, which form a loosely coupled lean framework addressing multiple important aspects including structural logging, component dependency resolution, ergonomic way of writing pure code with tagless final style and the ultimate resolution of the “monolith versus microservices” controversy.

Pavel and Kai are Irish software engineers and consultants, functional programming enthusiasts and Scala ecosystem contributors. They are authors of the Izumi Framework, including DIStage — compile-time safe, transparent and debuggable Dependency Injection framework for pure FP Scala; izumi-reflect — the compile time reflection mechanism behind ZIO ZLayer; and BIO — the ergonomic typeclass hierarchy for tagless final style with Bifunctor and Trifunctor effect types. Apart from that, they’ve contributed to various parts of the Scala ecosystem. For example, they’ve pioneered the asynchronous stack traces in ZIO.
