Wojciech Kucia: Mobile Backend in the Cloud

Have you ever wondered what is the best approach for building a robust and high performing mobile application backend?

What are the pros and cons of hosting it in the cloud?

What are the architectural and infrastructural decisions to be made?

Wojciech would like to share with you the story of an important patient-facing mobile application developed on the Amazon cloud (AWS) and why we chose AWS for both development and production.

Apart from the team’s journey from Roche on-premise hosting to true cloud-hosted applications, the discussion will focus on the technical details of serverless/PaaS components used by the application, including AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and others. Their strengths and weaknesses – the good, the bad and the downright ugly. All is based on our direct experience from design through to delivery.

Wojciech Kucia has 15+ years of professional IT experience and he has spent most of this time at Roche Global IT Solution Centre in Warsaw. He has worked for years as a software developer, then moved to delivery management, and finally settled in the realm of IT solutions design and architecture. His main focus now is the effective delivery of high-quality IT solutions tailored to real business needs.

Jacek Bekier: Building a Serverless Data Pipeline

Serverless query services enable executing SQL queries on data stored in an object storage service. By combining an ETL engine, an object storage service, and a query service, you can build a data repository and make data available to users and applications. In this talk, you will learn how to get started building a data pipeline and a data repository using serverless components.

Jacek Bekier is a Solution Architect at Roche Global IT Solution Centre. He has 15 years of experience in designing and building applications. Jacek is interested in cloud computing, microservice architecture and application security.
