Abstract:

How do you manage a team when you do not know what they need to do? The short answer is you don’t. Self-management is a key element to effective agile teams and is a fundamental element for Professional Scrum. But self-management, unfortunately is not a magic button and requires lots of purposeful actions by people in, around and above the team. In fact to build an environment that encourages teams and individuals to self-manage the organizations needs to do some management ☺ But most organizations do a poor job of putting in place the things that enable self-management to happen, and often look to blame the team when ultimately their move to agile has not delivered on the promise.

In this talk Dave West, CEO of Scrum.org describes what he has observed about self-management and what organizations can do to better prepare and support self-managing teams.

DAVE WEST:

Dave is the Product Owner and CEO at scrum.org. He is a frequent keynote speaker and is a widely published author of articles. He also is the co-author of two books, The Nexus Framework For Scaling Scrum and Head First Object-Oriented Analysis and Design. He led the development of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and then worked with Ivar Jacobson running the North American business for IJI. Then managed the software delivery practice at Forrester research where he was VP and research director. Prior to joining Scrum.org he was Chief Product Officer at Tasktop where he was responsible for product management, engineering and architecture.
